Ask for composition, not just “gold zari”. The appearance of gold cannot establish gold content.
A thread, not a colour
Zari is a metallic decorative thread. A gold appearance does not by itself tell you the metals, core, coating, or proportions involved. Tamil Nadu’s handloom policy documentation describes dedicated zari production and testing; composition is a question that evidence can address.
Read the seller’s terminology
Terms such as “pure zari”, “tested zari”, “half-fine”, and “imitation” need a precise explanation for the individual product. Ask what is being claimed, which material is measured, and whether a report or supplier declaration supports it. Do not assume that a trade label gives a complete recipe.
Keep silk and zari evidence separate
Silk Mark explicitly excludes zari purity and quality from its assurance. A saree can have a silk label while the buyer still needs a separate explanation of the metallic thread.
