The body, border, and pallu
The body is the main field of the saree. The long edges are framed by borders; the pallu is the decorative end displayed in the drape. These areas can carry different patterns, densities, and colours. Follow them across an unfolded piece before judging the design.
Look at the whole composition
A border that looks dramatic in a flat photograph may become quieter when pleated. A detailed pallu may dominate when worn open. Ask to see both arrangements if those are how you plan to wear the saree. Your preferred drape is part of choosing the design.
Check the usable dimensions
Ask for the actual length and width, and clarify whether a stated length includes an attached blouse piece. Confirm what remains available for the drape before any blouse fabric is cut. Do not assume that two listings using the same length description contain the same usable fabric.
Turn it over, gently
Examine the reverse, edges, joins, and any exposed floats without tugging threads. Discuss anything you do not understand with the seller. A close view helps you ask specific questions; it is not a substitute for documentation of origin or fibre.
